‘Run’ Is the Movie McDreamy Fans Forgot

There aren’t a lot of R-rated Disney action movies, but “Run” remains a supreme guilty pleasure from the Mouse House.

No, this isn’t the “Run” (2020) that stars Sarah Paulson as a mother committing Munchausen by Proxy. It’s also not “Run Hide Fight” (2020) the controversial school shooting drama that is becoming an online talking point. Nor is it “Run All Night” (2015), the Liam Neeson vs. Ed Harris action showdown.

Actually, the 1991 “Run” stars a post-“Can’t Buy Me Love” Patrick Dempsey as a smug law student named Charlie Farrow. His character is assigned to drive a Porsche to Atlantic City but winds up in Sawtucket when the engine overheats.

While waiting for the local mechanic to fix the car, Charlie talks his way into a high-stakes poker game, in which a hostile gambler (well played by veteran character actor A.C. Peterson) challenges him. A fight breaks out and, in an act of self-defense, Charlie accidentally kills him.

We quickly learn the gambler was the son of the highly connected goodfella named Halloran (Ken Pogue, solid as an unstable mob boss), who controls the entire town. Charlie flees the casino but finds every cop and gangster on the take is now after him.

If John Wick weren’t an assassin supreme but a smarmy punk college kid, whose special ability was just dumb luck, he’d be Charlie Farrow.

Dempsey fails to make this wiseass-on-the-run truly endearing but, in terms of his physical performance, he’s impressive here. Dempsey sprints, leaps, slides through the pins in a bowling alley lane, smacks into brick walls, dangles over high rise buildings, leaps over a cop car and flings himself down flights of steps.

It appears that he did most of his own stunts.

FAST FACT: “Run” earned an anemic $4.4 million at the U.S. box office, hardly making up for the film’s reported $16 million budget.

Dempsey’s best performance as a leading man was already behind him: Phil Alden Robinson’s “In the Mood” (1987), another out-of-print title, is Dempsey’s finest film work. Nevertheless, while “Run” isn’t an Oscar-caliber performance (and neither is the movie, to say the least), his fans would be delighted to see how convincing he is in a movie like this.

There are a few reasons you’ve probably never heard of “Run.”

It was an instant flop in theaters, found an audience on videocassette but was never released on DVD or Blu-ray and it’s not on Disney Plus, either. Dempsey’s late-career breakthrough with “Grey’s Anatomy” and a charming turn in “Enchanted” would surely have been enough reason to resurrect interest in “Run,” as it was one of two high profile 1991 movies that were aimed to turn Dempsey into an action star.

The other was the summer movie, “Mobsters,” in which Dempsey played Meyer Lansky and co-starred with Christian Slater.

As for why the film has been kept under wraps, perhaps Disney is uncomfortable promoting anything with a rating higher than PG (which has been its thing lately, since purchasing 20th Century Fox but putting the emphasis on its family-friendly streaming channel).

Or, maybe Dempsey is embarrassed by it, though he has nothing to be ashamed of — after all, he was once the star of “Meatballs III” (1987).

“Run” was the third film (after “Arachnophobia” and “Taking Care of Business”) released under Disney’s new Hollywood Pictures label (indeed, the end credits make it clear where it originates from: “This motion picture was created by Walt Disney Pictures and Television”).

RELATED: ‘Radioland Murders’ Looking Back at Lucas’s High Profile Flop

Hollywood Pictures was the second distribution label Disney created after the great experiment with Touchstone Pictures, in which the company known for “Bambi” and “Pinocchio” could release live-action, R-rated comedies for grown-ups. Think hits like “Down and Out in Beverly Hills,” “Stakeout,” “Ruthless People,” and “Outrageous Fortune” in addition to edgier PG-rated fare like “Splash” and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.”

Unlike today, where anything too objectionable doesn’t get aired on Disney+ and, therefore, is shelved, Disney used to distribute a diverse slate of films for a wide variety of audiences.

“Run” isn’t their first R-rated action/thriller shoot-em-up, either. Through Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures, they released “D.O.A.” (1988), “One Good Cop” (1991), “Crimson Tide” (1995) and “The Rock” (1996), to name a few examples.

What makes “Run” stand out, in addition to its obscure status, is that, even though it’s a dopey, generically plotted B-movie, it delivers junk food cinema enjoyment. Like its star, it’s quick on its feet and never stops moving.

As directed by Aussie filmmaker Geoff Burrowes (who helmed the winning “The Man from Snowy River” and “Return to Snowy River”), it’s like a junior version of “North by Northwest,” minus style or wit but lots of drive-in movie thrills.

Did I mention how dumb the screenplay is (from the writing team that gave us “Turner and Hooch”)? Farrow has three college roommates who are introduced in the first few minutes, demonstrating how the screenwriter likely took a single character, stretched it to three and divvied the lines to three interchangeable actors.

On the drive to Sawtucket, Farrow gleefully cries out, “Oh, I am so shallow!” No argument here.

The orchestral score is a synthesizer heavy and a missed opportunity — a string orchestra could have really enhanced this. There’s a bit involving the wrong man being assaulted at a payphone that landed much better in “F/X” (1986).

The one-liners don’t land, though the closing line is a keeper (though I don’t mean to imply that it’s any good).

Kelly Preston has a key role as a casino dealer who takes pity on Farrow. The late actress is too good for this role, though she shined in many thankless parts as girlfriends and love interests before her best work (“Citizen Ruth” and “Jerry Maguire”) showcased her abilities as a character actress.

According to an old issue of Premiere Magazine, “Run” was originally supposed to star Mikhail Baryshnikov and Tracy Pollan; the mind boggles at what this would have been like with those two in the lead (could Pollan have created chemistry opposite the greatest dancer of the 20th century?).

Nevertheless, the whole premise is set up and in motion before the opening credits have finished. Twenty minutes in, Dempsey has already been running a lot. This has better momentum than smarts.

“Run” maintains its grip and not because Farrow is so likable (the opposite is true, as Dempsey lays on the self-satisfied attitude too thick); the depiction of an entire town under the grip of a wealthy criminal, who is rich enough to pay anyone willing to sell out for him, is compelling.

As everyone in Sawtucket with a gun, badge or both is willing to compromise their ethics and stalk Farrow, the feeling of moral rot is all over the film.

The CGI-free and on-the-level stunt work is strong and by the end, in which there’s a showdown in an empty dog track, this becomes as pulpy and brutal as it should be.

Perhaps it was a mistake sticking with the R-rating, as a PG-13 could have at least enticed Dempsey’s fanbase from his (at this point) steady work in rom-coms. Maybe Disney wasn’t really the best choice to release a movie with a body count this high or repeated scenes of characters being kicked and punched in the crotch.

It isn’t classy, but “Run” is a guilty pleasure, a B-movie that gives us TV’s “McDreamy” playing the kind of role we’ll never see from him again.

Rap superstar Cardi B and female rapper Saweetie may be on the verge of having some BEEF. And from the looks of it, Cardi appears to want ALL THE SMOKE from the beautiful lyricist.

MTO News has spoken to people close with Saweetie, and the gorgeous rapper is FURIOUS with Cardi. According to our insider, Saweetie believes that Cardi is purposely trying to “jack” her signature sound.

In Cardi’s new song UP, Bardi says the lyric, “I know that’s right.” That’s one of Saweetie’s most recognizable signature tag lines.

The insider explained, “Cardi did that sh*t on purpose. She always has subliminal shade for [Saweetie] because [Saweetie] is prettier than her. She’s jealous and so she wanted to fire that shot on her record.”

Saweetie’s pal continued, “[Saweetie] is going to be cool cause she’s not trying to start anything between [Offset and Quavo]. But if Cardi keep up with this, its going to get ugly.”

Cardi is currently married to Offset from the Migos. And Saweetie is dating Offset’s cousin and group member Quavo.

So far Saweetie did not respond to the alleged shade that Cardi threw her way. But her auntie DID respond. Look at what Saweetie’s aunt wrote on IG last night:

R&B Singer Sza is going viral this morning, after she was caught continuously lying – about small things, MTO News has learned.

It’s a very bizarre scenario, which has many on Twitter wondering whether the R&B singer is a pathological liar.

MTO News confirmed that this week, SZA claimed that she’s never owned a television in her life –  and the singer asked fans for advice on which one to buy.

It turns out she was lying.

Folks on IG pulled up an image of Sza exercising in her living room – and you can clearly see a TV in the background.

A few years ago, she was caught doing something similar. SZA told her Twitter fans that she was “allergic” to most fruits and vegetables and so she couldn’t be a vegan.

But in an interview a few months later, she talked about how much she loves fruits and vegetables.

A Georgia second grade substitute teacher, who folks on social media have labeled ‘Pretty’, has been charged with 19 counts of child molestation following her arrest on Friday, MTO News has learned.

Amelia Ressler, 30, was arrested after staff members at Mt. Zion Elementary School reported that the teacher was engaging in “indecent and immoral acts while in the presence of school-aged children,” the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. The school is near Carrollton, about 54 miles west of Atlanta.

And the police claim to have proof. Carroll County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Ashley Hulsey says police have obtained photos and video of Amelia masturbating in front of a second-grade classroom.

Authorities are in the weekslong process of conducting interviews with the 19 children who were present in the classroom during the alleged incident. Additional charges could be added based on those interviews, according to the Sherriff’s Office.

“We appreciate the dedication Carroll County Schools has for the safety of their students as they are working diligently to communicate with all parents of students affected and we will continue to work closely with them during the remainder of the investigation,” the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Amelia is currently being held in the county jail. Bond has not been set, jail records show.

The Louisiana sheriff’s deputy died by suicide on Monday after recording and posting to social media videos of himself condemning institutionalized racism and describing his struggle as a Black law enforcement officer in a system that he says condones police brutality against Black people.

Lafayette Parish Deputy Clyde Kerr III, 43, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to a preliminary coroner’s report. He was outside the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, according to Capt. John Mowell.

“I’ve had enough of all of this nonsense, serving a system that does not give a damn about me or people like me,” Kerr said in one video, speaking directly to the camera. “You have no idea how hard it is to put a uniform on in this day and age with everything that’s going on.”

How This Lingerie Trend Weirdly Made Me Happier

Without question, lingerie is such a personal topic, particularly when it comes to preference and shopping for the right style and fit. While we’ve shared universal tips like the three bra styles everyone should own and the surprising amount of wears your bra can last before washing, today I’m slightly switching gears and sharing how changing my go-to undergarment situation weirdly made me happier. If you’re anything like me, you probably have one or two bras you wear on repeat and then a selection of underwear in rotation. In an effort to test out some of the season’s most talked-about lingerie trends, I swapped out my basic nude bras for cute bra-and-panty sets because, as we pointed out earlier this year, matching sets are one of the biggest trends in lingerie right now. Which also means I had plenty of brands to explore during this experiment.

So what happens when you swap your exhausted bra for a pretty matching set? To be clear, by no means am I suggesting this undergarment update is life-changing (or necessary, at that), but for me, this swap made me significantly happier, so I figured why not share the somewhat silly tip? My takeaway: Not only was I genuinely in a happier mood, but the additional two to three minutes I took for myself in the morning deciding which pretty set to wear (although trivial) was a great reminder to slow down and always make time to feel your best. This esteem carried throughout the day and solidified the importance of making time for yourself to set the tone of your day. Whether that means spending more time on your hair before work or carving out the time to cook yourself breakfast, it’s important and it works.

I’ll be the first to admit this is a small swap and the furthest thing from life-changing, but the extra effort I put into my undergarment choice gave my overall confidence a boost. To ensure I hadn’t lost it and I wasn’t alone, I reached out to Fleur du Mal founder Jennifer Zuccarini to chat about the theory, and Zuccarini agreed: “Lingerie is the first thing you put on, especially if you are dressing in front of a mirror. There’s something psychological about putting on a great set that makes you feel more put together, confident, and often sexier—even if no one else sees, it’s like, I’ve got this; it’s going to be a good day,” she added. Down to give it a try? I’ve made it easy for you and shopped the best matching bra-and-underwear sets below.

While this change in my undergarment choice made me happier, there are other (fashionable) ways to increase your happiness and confidence, like these joyful purchases.

Sorry, ’80s Kids—You Might Cringe at This Trend’s Revival

If you grew up or spent any amount of time as a consciously thinking human in the ’80s, this micro-trend is about to give you all the feels—as in, all the nostalgia—good or bad. Just like the other trends reemerging from the decade right now, such as puffy sleeves and neon brights, this one is bound to be polarizing. Ready or not, metallic clothing is on the rise.

While you may have reserved your shiniest, sparkliest pieces for nights out or New Year’s Eve, it’s time to embrace your inner disco girl for all hours of the day, too. If metallic clothing seems intimidating to you, fret not. The easiest way to embrace all that glitters is by balancing it out with clean neutrals and solid-colored basics. Try out a pair of pink metallic mules with your everyday jeans or ground a party dress with neutral heels. Get inspired by how fashion girls are reclaiming the trend in 2021, and then shop some suggestions to get you started.

Paco Rabanne’s retro chainmail pieces have earned It status among the fashion set.

Channel Kendall Jenner in cool-girl brand Area on your next night out with friends.

It doesn’t get any more fun (or timeless) than a metallic party dress.

“Disco pants” like the ones from Saks Potts and Hosbjerb are the latest micro-trend all the Scandi girls are getting in on.

Go for metallic versions of the pieces you already know and love, like a structured blazer.

Feeling the shine? Load up on metallic accessories.

Take note: Metallic swimwear is the latest emerging swim trend to take 2021 by storm.

If you’re really gunning for an ’80s revival, team metallic pieces with puffy sleeves.

For more polarizing trendssee all the ways I styled low-rise pants even though they truly scare me.

7 Perfectly Unwoke Comedy Podcasts

February 6, 2021

Celebrity Gossip

The comedy world is hopelessly, irretrievably woke.

It’s why late night comics won’t poke fun at Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive who embraces every social justice cause she can find. Nor will they mock celebrities like Sia or Scarlett Johansson who bow to the woke mob.

They’re in on the con.

A small, subversive band of comic podcasters offer something different.

Their unwoke podcasts focus on human foibles, not politically correct posturing. The result? Brisk conversations, laughter and insights you won’t hear elsewhere.

No lectures, guilt trips or virtue signaling, thank you. They’re a refreshing oasis in a land teeming with politically correct banter. Some exist on massive platforms, while others created their own to ensure no one will cancel them.

‘The Anthony Cumia Show’

The “Opie and Anthony” alum and partner Dave Landau deliver laughs from an earlier era, when jokes were considered jokes, not policy statements. Cumia’s take no prisoners approach isn’t for everyone, but those eager for unfiltered comedy with a dash of conservatism will be more than satiated.

Cumia riffs through the latest headlines, marinating them in his seasoned wit. What emerges on his Compound Media platform isn’t always pretty, but it’s like watching a comedy workshop in real time. The jokes start small, then grow, as Cumia and Landau whack the fat away to reveal the meaty laughter.

It’s free speech in all its glory — raw, unfinished and wildly unapologetic.

‘The Tim Dillon Show’

The 30-something comic brings a joy to the podcasting mic that too many comics lack. Yes, he knows there’s plenty to be miserable about, but his focus remains on the glass being decidedly half full.

Dillon leans to the right, but his political positions aren’t easily pinned down. That’s by design. He’s more open minded, and curious, than your average tribal thinker. Best of all? He’s fearless, eager to strip down big ideas without worrying who may or may not be offended.

‘The Joe Rogan Experience’

There’s little doubt the “NewsRadio” alum leans to the Left, but it’s the old-school Left where debate and free speech thrive. That’s made him a pariah to the woke mob, which would love to silence his podcast one way or another.

Good luck.

Rogan turned his curiosity and wit into a podcasting phenomena, inking a reported $100 million Spotify contract last year. That means his willingness to interview anyone — be they liberal, centrist or conservative  — — reaches a different audience now.

It’s still an oasis of free thought, veritable Kryptonite to today’s super woke agenda.

‘The Boyscast’

Ryan Long is a one-man army when it comes to battling woke insanity. The Canadian comic’s aggressively apolitical persona isn’t here to pick a party or side. He goes where the juiciest targets roam or, more specifically, targets most comics won’t touch.

It’s why his signature videos rack up thousands, and thousands of views. He brings that approach to his weekly podcast, one celebrating what it means to be a man. What could be more subversive than praising so-called “toxic masculinity?”

‘Culture Wars with Andrew Doyle’

No one shreds the woke Left better than Titania McGrath. She’s the Queen Bee of social justice warriors, telling us precisely what to think, and say.

It’s a farce, of course. Titania is Doyle’s signature creation, a faux Twitter personality who exposes the moral rot infesting the Left. His podcast expands on that work, letting the British comic drill down into the current culture battles in western society.

Doyle’s social media creation got outed recently, but he’s kept up Titania’s mission on social media and beyond.

‘The Adam Carolla Show’

Carolla was one of the first comedians to identify, and reject, the woke agenda. And he’s never wavered from that approach. The versatile comic may no longer co-host “The Man Show,” but he’s still ready and willing to tell jokes others won’t go near.

It’s common sense on steroids, an approach that couldn’t be more different than his longtime friend Jimmy Kimmel’s TV perch.

Carolla’s “no apologies” promise offers a template for other comedians to follow. Too bad so many reject that advice.

‘The Loftus Party’

Michael Loftus wears more hats than most comic minds. He’s a veteran TV writer, producer, stand-up comic and the mind behind “The Loftus Party” podcast.

The latter lets him break down the news of the day, often with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Sure, the conversations are bright and informed, but Loftus is always looking for the funny wherever it may be hiding.

Cardi B released her newest song, and music video UP yesterday and it’s a HUGE hit. The song is catchy, and the video is AMAZING.

But MTO News has a bit of tea surrounding the filming if the video – which took place in Los Angeles a few weeks ago – during the COVID lockdown.

According to a person close to Cardi, many people on the set claimed that Cardi and her dancers “broke COVID protocol” by kissing in the first scene.

The insider explained, “We were filming in COVID and everyone had to get tested. But we were also really careful on set – wearing masks between takes, et cetera.”

Cardi’s acquaintance continued, “All of a sudden they all started kissing – which wasn’t scripted – and people got nervous.”

New video showing the police interrogation of Empire actor Bryshere Grey from this past summer has leaked online, MTO News has learned. And the video shows the Empire actor behaving in a bizarre manner – leading fans to speculate that either Bryshere has gone crazy or is on drugs.

Bryshere Gray was arrested on domestic violence charges they past June in Arizona following a 911 call placed by a woman identifying herself as his wife.

This video was taken immediately after the arrest, when police interrogated the actor. Bryshere was acting strange. He kept fidgeting and rambled on and on about “processed food.”

Goodyear Police Department — based out of Goodyear, Arizona — reported that 26-year-old Gray, who played Hakeem Lyon on the Fox show, had been arrested Sunday night. The department received the 911 call, wherein the caller said she was the actor’s wife and had been assaulted by her husband at their home in Goodyear, around 10:15 p.m.

A press release regarding the arrest added more detail, stating that the woman made the call after being given a ride by someone she flagged down at a gas station. She told the person who drove her that she had been assaulted for several hours. Per the release, the woman had “numerous visible injuries” on her body and said that Gray strangled her to the point where she once lost consciousness.

Yesterday sports talk show host Colin Cowherd made what appears to be an inappropriate comment about his co-host Joy Taylor’s breasts. And MTO News has learned that many fans of the sports caster are trying to get him “cancelled” for the alleged comment.

The pair were discussing the best cities to play football, and Colin slipped up, and appeared to subconsciously compliment his co-hosts breasts. While talking with Joy, instead of saying “two cities” Colin instead used the phrase “two titties.”

Here are some pictures of Joy:

Colin is a sports media personality. Cowherd began his broadcasting career as sports director of Las Vegas television station KVBC and as a sports anchor on several other stations before joining ESPN in 2003, where he hosted a radio show on the ESPN Radio network and also became one of the original hosts of ESPN’s television program SportsNation, as well as Colin’s New Football Show. Cowherd is the host of The Herd with Colin Cowherd on Fox Sports Radio and Fox Sports 1. The Herd is FS1’s top-rated studio program. He was also a host of Speak For Yourself on FS1.

After Cowherd made a controversial statement about Dominican Republic baseball players, it was announced in July 2015 that Cowherd would leave ESPN following the end of his contract with them. In August 2015, it was revealed that he would join Fox Sports beginning in September—a deal that includes his radio show moving to Fox Sports Radio and Fox Sports 1. While scheduled to leave at the end of the month, Cowherd was suspended from ESPN on July 24, 2015 after those controversial remarks he made on The Herd the previous day.

Production on “T.I. & Tiny: Friends & Family Hustle” has been suspended amid a sexual abuse investigation, MTO News has learned

Rapper and actor Tip “T.I.” Harris, 40, and his wife, Tameka ‘Tiny’ Harris, 45, who star in the hit reality TV series, were accused last week by multiple of women of drugging women, abuse and sex trafficking.

The allegations first came out, when Tiny’s former friend Sabrina Peterson, who has a checkered history with telling the truth, accused the couple’s elf abusine multiple women.

Celebrity attorney Lisa Bloom announced yesterday that she is representing one of the accusers.

But VH-1 bosses aren’t waiting for any legal action before shutting down the set.

According to Deadline, the producers have voluntarily suspended production.

“We are aware of the allegations, and while they are not connected to our show, we have reached out to T.I. and Tameka Harris, as well as local and state officials,” an MTV Entertainment spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline.

“Given the serious nature of the allegations, we have decided to suspend production in order to gather more information.”

This Controversial ’80s Nail Trend Is Back, and We’re Not Complaining

Sure, there are a lot of ’80s beauty trends that we think are better left in the past. But we’ve been seeing some ’80s-inspired trends that actually look like they fit right in for these modern times. Blue eye shadow can be done in a way that doesn’t look like you’ve time-traveled. People aren’t afraid to wear a bold lip in a bright color. And heck, the mullet is even updated for the 21st century. You might feel moved to ask for business in the front, party in the back during your next haircut.

But if you’re not quite ready to rock a mullet aren’t sold on these makeup trends coming back, there’s a way that you can experiment and ease into it. A low-lift way to pay homage to the ’80s is with neon nails.

Adding just this pop of color to your nails can be fun, and you don’t have to commit at all if you hate it. Give it a try, I say! For me, just looking down at brightly colored nails can make me smile and add a little pep to my step, so to speak. And rocking a fresh manicure can be a confidence boost.

If you’re looking to experiment the next time you do your nails, take a look at some of our favorite neon polishes.

Why not start strong with a bright but not blinding neon yellow? First of all, yellow is such an underrated polish color. Secondly, this one is definitely for those who want to stand out.

Another classic neon color, green is super vibrant. If you don’t want to do something fluorescent, you can also opt for a lime green for a similar vibe.

I mean, pink was big in the ’80s, so how can you go wrong with hot-pink nails? It’s super fun, playful, and feminine.

Don’t sleep on neon purple. And if you really want to take it to the next level, you can choose a polish with some major sparkle.

When it comes to blue neon nails, you can go with the traditional shade, but you’ve got other options here, too. Try electric blue or a super-bold turquoise.

Neon orange is a lot of fun for summer, but also, it’s a lot of fun for times when you’re missing summer. It’s fiery and bold—give it a try sometime.

After three years together, Super Bowl champion Victor Cruz and actress Karrueche Tran have split, a source exclusively confirmed yesterday. “Right now, they are focused on continuing to grow their successful careers,” . “There are no hard feelings. This is just a case of two people moving forward in life separately,” E! News is reporting

Back in December 2017, the duo went public with their then-budding romance, stepping out hand-in-hand on an L.A. date night. From then on, they became a staple on the red carpet and at Hollywood events, including the MTV Video Music Awards, the BET Awards and, of course, New York Fashion Week.

ARE NIECEY NASH AND Karrueche Tran GAY LOVERS?

However, amid the coronavirus pandemic, their already bi-coastal relationship turned into an indefinitely long distanced one, with Victor at home in his New Jersey mansion with his 9-year-old daughter Kennedy while Karrueche remained on the west coast.

And now MTO News is hearing that word on the curb is that Karrueche has moved on – and is dating a handsome Caucasian actor. Expect pics of Kat and her new bae any day now . . .

I admittedly hadn’t scrolled through Zara’s shoe selection in a while, but suddenly had the urge to this morning, and am I glad I did. When I tell you the spring Zara shoes are good, I am not exaggerating, folks. I immediately had over a dozen browser tabs open and they were all Zara shoes, so of course, I had to tell you about them.

On my spring shoe wishlist are plenty of flats and comfortable house shoes, but I’m also itching to buy a few new pairs of heels, even if I don’t know if and when I’ll even wear them this year (although I’m trying to think optimistically). But Zara has some heels that took my breath away, so that could very well be what’s inspiring me.

Spring shoe shopping is the most exciting shoe shopping, as our feet have been stuffed into boots for months and months and they’re ready to be set free. Zara has so many shoes I’d like to set my feet free with. Keep scrolling to shop my favorites.

Thank you for actually making me want to wear heels, Zara.

These are the spring shoes I’d probably end up wearing the most.

The clog trend isn’t going anywhere.

Feet scrunchies!

For inside or outside—your choice.

These make me happy.

The perfect transitional shoes, don’t you think?

Springtime is colortime.

Meet you new go-to black heels.

The loafer trend is important.

No caption needed.

I love these low-key sneakers.

I’m 100% ready to get on board with the fisherman sandals trend.

These look expensive and they go with everything.

I think this means that desert boots are happening.

I’m obsessed with this shade of green.

Pink shoes are pretty much a neutral in the spring.

I love shoes with stitching.

I Tried on 43 Cheap Basics at Nordstrom—I Would Buy These 16 Right Away

We love an editor try-on story here at Who What Wear. Whether our editorial staffers are testing affordable pieces from Who What Wear Collection or our market editor is finding the best winter dresses between Amazon, H&M, and Zara, we spend almost as much time snapping mirror pics as we do sitting at our computers. We figure it’s a fantastic way to serve you authentic shopping content, and we are happy to fill our camera rolls with research for you, dear reader.

Today’s subject is affordable basics from Nordstrom. I may have taken a little leeway with the term “basic,” as some of these items lean more toward basic with a twist. But rest assured, my picks are all incredibly versatile, and largely very affordable, with tons of options under $100 and only one special pick over $150. Additionally, this time I thought I’d infuse some real reviews from Nordstrom shoppers to add a second point of view. You’ll see those sprinkled throughout, as well as a new section at the end featuring a small fraction of the items that just didn’t make the cut. I figure knowing which items are less stellar IRL can be just as valuable as picking out the winners. Start scrolling to get to the cream of the basics crop at Nordstrom.

This cozy camel sweater was one of my favorite things I tried on. I can’t believe it’s under $50, and it seems like the kind of material that doesn’t pill. Also, most importantly, it’s not itchy. I should have mentioned that first, as it’s the first test all prospective sweaters must pass. Who has time to be uncomfortable?

All you need in life is this black dress. Hear me out: It’s subtly ribbed, which always makes cotton feel a bit more luxurious. It’s rather body-conscious, but even this girl who owns exactly zero form-fitting dresses felt comfortable. I love how the turtleneck piece elevates it, and the length balances out that curve-flaunting fit. In a word, it’s perfection.

This is the only pick in the bunch that I couldn’t resist sharing three, count ’em, three pictures of with you. I was so impressed with this blazer. I would hire it for a job on the spot. Report to my closet effective immediately! Seriously though, the material is truly standout. It has a really natural feel, and the raw edges add to the effect. It ends up making a rather serious item feel a bit easy and cool. It was originally styled with the cuff rolled up, and thank goodness it can be rolled down, or that would have been a dealbreaker. This is a size eight. Normally I would have grabbed a two or four, but I’m not mad at this oversize fit.

One reviewer who purchased this blazer said, “I probably wore it 4 times in the first week. Goes great with so many things, especially jeans.”

This is a really solid coat. It’s thick, feels luxurious, and you know a classic check will never go out of style. Plus it’s on sale, go, go! I’m wearing an XS here. One online reviewer who owns the coat said, “Such a great quality jacket, and it’s so chic! Fits slightly oversized and is double breasted so the front hangs open a bit more than a single would. You can wear with black or brown, and I’ve already received a lot of compliments. It’s def worth getting at the sale price!”

Every woman should own a classic black blazer. It is wardrobe 101, so if you’re waiting for a sign to get yours, this is it darlin’. To me, a double-breasted blazer like this one always feels a tad more elevated than single-breasted. Once this number arrives in the mail, may I suggest popping out your collar like me? All the fashion girls are doing it. I’m wearing a size small here, so as you can tell, the cut is a bit oversized.

Upon zipping up this dress, I’m pretty sure I mouthed, “Check me out,” to no one in particular. Hello, waist! Hello, beautiful curves! This ruched dress was made to highlight your assets, and I love that it’s versatile to wear to work with a blazer (may, I recommend the one just above?) and could also be completely appropriate for a spring wedding. This is a size four, which felt easy and absolutely non-restrictive.

Here’s a closer look at the print.

My love for a matching set knows no bounds. Whether it’s a suit or a slip skirt and cami, I feel honest-to-goodness relief when I’m searching for an outfit and come across a solid set in my closet. I don’t know a better way to put in minimal effort and get such a high return on looking put together. The skirt I’m wearing is an XS, but would opt for small if they had it. The XS top was perfect for me.

Okay, so this bodysuit isn’t exactly a basic, but it’s so cute I couldn’t resist trying it on. Polka dots will always be in style, okay? The silky material looks super premium and I’m a sucker for a covered button. Plus, since it’s a bodysuit, I don’t have to worry about any retucking.  I’m wearing a size small here.

This has to be one of the more stylish henleys I’ve ever seen. From the cute buttons to the bib-like seam, the details elevate it tremendously. The texture is spot-on, too. I’m wearing an XS here, so you can see it’s a slightly oversize fit, which is perfect for the laid-back vibe of the top.

I’ve already waxed poetic about Thread & Supply’s wildly soft fleece pullovers. Previously, I compared their fleece to a cloud hugging you, and I stand behind that. This time around, I’ve grown out my bangs and tried on a new color. I would say it has more of an olive tint IRL than the model photo below shows. My favorite bit is the navy blue contrast at the collar. I’m wearing an XS here.

I can never have enough silk camis. They’re the basic that keeps on giving. This one is more olive in person; on the model, it looks weirdly bronze. I’m wearing an XS. One reviewer who owns the top said, “I have been wearing this cami all winter long! I pair it with a warm blazer or alpaca cardigan. This cami is super soft, layers well, and is actually warm enough for winter months.”

Predictable. I’m back in a matching set. Now I know this pick probably isn’t as exciting as the polka-dot bodysuit you can see in the back of this picture, but I would like to bet that you’ll get a ton of wear out of these two pieces. The top and skirt are both ribbed, and the slight crop on the shirt ensures they meet just perfectly. This means I can avoid the bulk of tucking in the top while simultaneously keeping my stomach covered. I’m wearing a small here in both.

I know it’s still winter, but you can’t blame a girl for looking ahead to spring can you? The ruched trend is only on the up, and this charming top is the perfect example of how to get the look. Plus, it costs about the same as a pedicure in Los Angeles. I pick the top, and I can do my toes at home, thanks! I’m wearing a small here.

Howsabout another look at that texture?

A classic quilted bomber is a purchase that will never go out of style. I could picture wearing this when I’m 70! Like other olive pieces in this roundup, the Nordstrom model’s version looks strangely bronze. Trust me, it is green, not metallic brown! One reviewer said, “Super cute jacket. It pretty much looks and fits on me as in the pics. It’s lightweight, not heavy. Room to spare for layering, but not overwhelming. Price-wise it’s a good value. Just love it!”

Maybe I just needed a good steamer to love this dress, but no matter how many photos I took, I couldn’t catch one I liked. I much preferred the bodysuit version, which is much more versatile anyway.

Another case where I had to take 10 million photos to get one decent one. The shoulder on this top is a little too intense, and as one reviewer noted, it’s a tad itchy, too.

This post was published at an earlier date and has since been updated.

Next up, check out the perfect white tees almost 1000 people are eyeing at Nordstrom.

The Hailey Bieber Way to Make Your Jeans Look Cool Without Buying New Ones

Hailey Bieber is a style icon of the 2020s because she very much stays true to her signature aesthetic, and she sets trends every time she leaves the house—hence the reason we cover her looks so much here at Who What Wear. And set trends is just what she did when out running errands earlier his week.

Remember back when it didn’t matter how long your jeans were because everyone just rolled them up? Ready or not, Bieber seems to have made that a thing again with this look. The key to outfit success when it comes to rolled-up jeans is, in Bieber’s case, loose-fit jeans that make it all look a bit effortless (we’d advise against rolling up your skinny jeans at this time), and socks. In fact, we wouldn’t be against just copying her whole look, from the wayfarers to the leather brazer and chunky belt to the Dr. Martens oxfords. It’s all perfect. Keep scrolling to shop pieces to do just that, or just roll up the pair you’re wearing right now for free.

On Hailey Bieber: Magda Butrym Fitted Leather Blazer in Black ($2055); Re/Done Levi’s High Rise Loose Jeans ($320); Bottega Veneta Padded Cassette Bag ($2990); Dr. Martens 1461 Shoes ($110); Kaze Individual Series Masks ($36); Zara belt

You’re Sabotaging Your Skin If This Ingredient Is Missing From Your Routine

Being into skincare is basically a personality trait at this point. It’s safe to say we’ve reached peak preoccupation with our skin, which is why it feels so normal to perform multistep morning and evening routines meant to combat fine lines, dark spots, under-eye bags, and every other physical marker on our faces that might indicate that we, in fact,  are not freshly hatched babies with brand-new skin. As fun as it can be to research products and try out new formulas to smooth, plump, and impart a healthy glow, it’s all pointless if we turn around and face the ultimate dealer of premature signs of aging—the sun—without adequate protection. All this to say, we’re sticking by countless experts who say SPF is officially a nonnegotiable in skincare.

Not only are some of the most popular active skincare ingredients of late, like retinol and chemical exfoliants, notorious for enhancing our skin’s sun sensitivity, but neglecting to use SPF can also enhance the development of pesky hyperpigmentation and fine lines that take lots of time and energy to treat. A mark or line here or there is not the end of the world, but if you’re spending your precious time and money on products and treatments, then it’s only right to protect that investment with the insurance policy that is daily sunscreen whenever you’ll be spending time outside.

But don’t worry. The days of goopy, irritating facial sunscreens that interfere with our makeup or clog our pores are long gone. These days, there are plenty of daily moisturizers with SPF that can both nourish the skin and provide the recommended levels of broad-spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays. Keep scrolling for 20 editor-approved moisturizers with SPF that make it so easy to incorporate the vital ingredient into your skincare routine.

This sunscreen is easy to wear and layer under makeup, and it’s formulated to create an additional layer of invisible sun protection as it comes into contact with heat, sweat, and water.

For those with acne-prone skin or those who just don’t want to overwhelm their faces with heavy products during the day, this noncomedogenic formula should be on your radar. It offers lightweight hydration with a soft matte finish that’s perfect for the oil averse among us.

Aveeno does oil-free, noncomedogenic, and hypoallergenic as well as any brand in the game and offers a super-affordable price point to boot. This daily moisturizer brings together all those elements while also offering broad-spectrum SPF 30 protection.

This is one of the most underrated product launches of the last year. It’s got hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and olive leaf extract to deeply hydrate the skin. It glides on smoothly and absorbs quickly, so you won’t have to worry about it breaking up underneath makeup or causing shininess by midday. It’s also great for sensitive skin types since it’s formulated without synthetic dyes or fragrances.

This reef-safe formula relies on probiotics and wild butterfly ginger root to comfort the skin all day, but its lightweight gel formulation makes it nongreasy and completely transparent on the skin.

Tinted moisturizer is one category that’s notoriously torturous for anyone with a skin tone any deeper than olive. The pigments in the formulas tend to disregard undertone and appear gray on darker skin, so it’s pretty rare to find an option that actually functions well for folks across the skin tone spectrum. This is one of the few options that does! It’s super hydrating and is infused with collagen, hyaluronic acid, niacin, peptides, and antioxidants, making it the perfect product for those looking to majorly simplify their morning routines.

The main draw of tinted moisturizers is that they’re supposed to replace day cream, foundation, and in some cases, sunscreen in your routine. That sounds great in theory, but in reality, most tinted moisturizers don’t actually hydrate the skin enough to be worn on their own. At best, most of them just leave the skin looking and feeling incredibly oily. That’s not the case here. This one is a gel-cream hybrid formulated with squalane and marine botanicals to soothe and hydrate the skin. Plus, it comes in 20 diverse shades to accommodate everyone and has SPF 30.

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it forever: No conversation about tinted moisturizer is complete without mentioning this OG option. It’s formulated with vitamins C and E, along with a whole host of moisturizing ingredients to nourish the skin as it offers sheer coverage to even out the complexion.

This oil-free option is perfect for those who avoid tinted moisturizers due to their notoriously oily consistencies. Reviewers describe it as lightweight and velvety.

If you’re looking for a mineral sunscreen that offers sheer and dewy color-correcting coverage and has nothing but good-for-you ingredients in it, then this is the option to reach for. Saie even has a tool on its site to help you choose the perfect shade for your skin tone, which can be tricky with tinted moisturizers. Genius.

Fans of the classic Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream will be thrilled to know that there’s a version that offers broad-spectrum SPF 30. It’s perfect for dry skin or for use during the winter since it has skin-loving ingredients like squalane, fountain plant, and Antarcticine, but it disappears on application just like the OG version.

Supergoop! offers tons of different sunscreen options, and most of its formulas are completely sheer, even on dark skin tones. In case you weren’t aware, that’s a major feat that many brands still haven’t mastered. This option is great because it’s a dedicated daytime moisturizer with antioxidant- and moisture-rich blue-green algae, moisture-binding plant fermentation film, and cerium to reflect and shield the skin from blue light.

This dermatologist-developed moisturizer was formulated with Black and brown women in mind, calling in ingredients to address common concerns like uneven skin tone, rough texture, and hyperpigmentation. And no white cast, ever.

Black Girl Sunscreen isn’t just for Black girls, but it certainly exists to give those with dark skin, who are grossly underserved in the SPF market, a reliable sun protection option that doesn’t leave behind an unsightly hue. It blends seamlessly into every single skin tone and infuses ingredients like jojoba and avocado oils in the process.

If you’re a loyal WWW reader, then you’ve definitely seen this formula touted by countless derms and skin experts, as well as our own editors. It’s one of the very best facial sunscreens that’s not only super-effective but also suitable for all skin types and tones.

This moisturizer leaves skin with a soft matte finish without going dry or chalky. It’s also got antioxidants and vitamin E to protect the skin as it provides the perfect base for makeup.

Though SPF 30 is widely considered an adequate level of sun protection for everyday wear on the face, there’s certainly nothing wrong with seeking the added peace of mind and slightly higher protection of SPF 50 and above. (Although, it is important to note that higher levels of SPF don’t last any longer on the skin and will still need to be re-applied throughout the day for optimal results.) This luxe option from Eve Lom protects the skin from the sun and from free radicals that can also cause damage.

This lightweight sunscreen protects against blue-light damage as well as UVA and UVB rays, all without the telltale white cast many sunscreens can leave behind. According to many reviews, those with extra-dry skin may need to layer it on top of another lightweight moisturizer to reach comfortable moisture levels.

This fluid formula smooths evenly over the skin and dries down to a lovely velvet finish that’s never greasy-feeling. In addition to superb sun protection, you also get the added benefits of soothing green tea and oat extracts in addition to an antioxidant blend to defend against other environmental factors that can lead to premature aging.

This moisturizer battles aging not only by providing broad-spectrum SPF protection but also by preventing free-radical damage via antioxidants and polyphenols. Up next, 4 Retinol Myths You Should Probably Erase From Your Mind

How ‘Son of the South’ Misses Big Picture on Race, Reconciliation

Director Barry Alexander Brown’s “Son of the South” depicts the “based on a true story” legacy of Bob Zellner, the son and grandson of KKK members who aided the efforts of Civil Rights activists.

Brown, who edited many of Spike Lee’s greatest films, wrote and edited “South” but fails to convince us why Zellner’s tale needed a feature-length portrait.

It begins in Mississippi in 1961, where we see Zellner’s defying the peer pressure of his community and even his Klansman grandfather (the late Brian Dennehy), who warns him that his efforts for peace and unity will be met with violence.

As one of five white college students who is noted for his progressive views on race, Zellner risks alienating his family and community by finding ways to help the Civil Rights movement. Figures like John Lewis (an outstanding Dexter Darden) and Rosa Parks (a great Sharonne Lanier) intermingle with Zellner’s journey, with the latter telling him, “There comes a time when you’ll have to decide which side you’re on… not choosing is a choice.”

“Son of the South” is dedicated to Lewis, includes a special thanks to Dr. Maya Angelou and Lee serves as the film’s executive producer. Considering the pedigree and the importance of the subject matter, I wish the film were so much better than it is.

RELATED: Serious Star Power Fuels Race-based ‘Best of Enemies’

A fatal flaw is the miscasting of Lucas Till as Zellner. You may know Till from his turn as TV’s new “MacGyver” or from starring in the infamous flop, “Monster Trucks.” As Zellner, Till recites all of his lines in exactly the same glib and laidback way.

The actor is stiff, one-note and not yet ready to carry a film. Because the actor is so underwhelming, I found myself never caring about Zellner and wished the film would latch onto Lewis and or Parks. Till especially reveals himself to be out of his element when acting toe to toe with Dennehy or Julia Ormand.

FAST FACT: “Son of the South” is based on Zellner’s autobiography, “The Wrong Side of Murder Creek.”

While Zellner’s actions were admirable and worthy of discussion, the film never convinced me that we needed another film about the Civil Rights era from the point of view of a Caucasian. This is a history lesson from the wrong perspective, a reminder of films like “Heart of Dixie” (1989). We’ve had more than enough of those.

Only the end credits, which includes footage of the real Zellner during a peaceful protest, convinced me of the story’s potential as a film, albeit as a documentary. With new and far more memorable films about this subject matter, like the just-out documentaries “MLK/FBI” and “John Lewis: Good Trouble,” as well as the recent “Selma” finding an audience,

Lucy Hale tries, and fails, to bring much life to the by-the-numbers role of Zellner’s initially supportive but mostly disapproving girlfriend. As he did in Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed,” Cedric the Entertainer is startlingly great in a straight turn, once again playing a man of faith.

Brown’s abilities as an editor are in plain view — note the scene where the Freedom Riders are beaten when their bus arrives in Montgomery. Brown shapes it with skill, though he also keeps cutting away from the violence and bringing us back to Zellner’s safe distance.

The whole film is like that, a work that intends to inspire but feels too emotionally removed to be as angry and impassioned as it should be. Likewise, the music score is overly lightweight.

“Son of the South” feels truly alive when Darden’s John Lewis and Lanier’s Rosa Parks are briefly the focus. Since Zellner was a supporting member in the efforts for civil liberties and freedom for African Americans, he should’ve been a supporting character in a movie about this period and not the main focus.

There’s a powerful sequence in which activists are given training to be non-violent against those who oppose them; it’s the most bruising scene here. Otherwise, the complications that Zellner faces along the way, as depicted here, like a half-baked romance and a final confrontation from a town bully, come across as limp wristed.

The story going on around Zellner is the real story, which is a big problem for “Son of the South.”

There are a few brutal scenes but otherwise, this is ready for the Hallmark Channel. Zellner’s work, and that of everyone who suffered greatly and made enormous progress during this painful time, deserve a far stronger, more immediate film tribute.

Iggy Azalea welcomed her first child, a son named Onyx, in June 2020 – after years of surgical butt treatments. Iggy seems to have gotten most of her old body to snap back.

Unfortunately, her surgically enhanced butt appears to have “dropped”, and some fans say that it appears to be dropping to her knees..

On Wednesday the 30-year-old blonde beauty revealed that she has lost all of the baby weight as she was seen at a gas station in Los Angeles.

The Grammy Award-nominated rapper was svelte in an all-black catsuit that proves MOST of her has snapped back into shape nicely. Her butt clearly hasn’t.

Here are a few of the images, that are VERY unflattering:

A South Florida inmate tried to shoot his shot at the judge, during his arraignment, MTO News has learned.

And for a second there, it appeared that the judge was interested in him.

The incident occurred during a virtual hearing held by Judge Tabitha Blackmon – who is a real beauty.

Demetrius seemed struck when he first saw the judge. “How ya doin’ how ya doin’?” the front-cuffed but casual suspect greets the judge at the start of his hearing.

“Alright, I’m good sir; how are you?” the judge answers with a flirty smile.

“Judge, you is so gorgeous a judge … you’re gorgeous,” he tells her.

“I love you. I love you,: the inmate adds

“Alright Mr. Lewis. Flattery will get you everywhere,” she responds. “But maybe not here.”

The judge then dropped the bad news. She explained to Demetrius that she has found probable cause for charges of burglary and possession of the drug ecstasy.

Then a prosecutor asks for $7,500 bail, noting that three children were present in the home that Lewis allegedly tried to break into.

“WHAT!?” the defendant’s voice can be heard shouting.

The judge agrees, and he’s ushered away.

An Atlanta woman named Jessica Brown is going viral, after MTO News learned that the 22 year old used Gorilla Glue to lay her hair – and now it’s stuck.

Jessica explained to her followers on TikTok that she typically uses hair spray to keep her hair in place. Unfortunately, Jessica ran out of hairspray and improvised – she decided to use Gorilla Glue spray instead.

Initially, the Atlanta native was happy with the way the glue held her hair in place. Then she realized the glue was holding her hair a little too well.

Her hair has now been stuck in the same style now for the past few weeks. And it looks like she may have to continue rocking that ponytail forever.

Check out Jessica’s story:

A White woman claims thats he was punched, stabbed, and strangled – all because she is dating a Black man, MTO News has learned. The blonde told local media in Philadelphia that she was brutally attacked by another woman last Friday in North Philadelphia.

Nearly one week ago, this couple, whose names and identities have been concealed, say they were attacked by a woman they’ve never met. The attacking woman allegedly was upset that the couple was dating interracially.

The girlfriend is white. The boyfriend is Black.

“It takes her seconds to drop the fact that it was a problem of me being white in that neighborhood, white women shouldn’t date Black men,” the victim told the local CBS news affiliate.

“Grabs my hair, pulls it and I’m yanked to the ground,” she said.

According to the police report, the attacker continued to beat and stab the woman in the face with her key.

“I can hear my boyfriend just like screaming to get her off of me,” the victim said.

As a crowd gathers, the attacker strangles her.

“She is digging her nails into my neck until I can’t breathe anymore,” the victim said.

The attacker suddenly stops and goes back to her car. The victim snaps a photo of her.

“As I do that, I see her pull out her gun,” the victim said. “I was like this is how I die, this is it.”

The blonde yells “I have your picture.” She says the attacker puts her gun back in the car [and left].”

Police describe the suspect as a Black female, medium complexion and build, 6-foot, with straight black hair. She is wanted for questioning.

A Definitive List of Burberry’s Best Perfumes, According to Everyone

Burberry may be known for its iconic tartan and classic trench coat (among other things), but the British fashion house has its footprint in the beauty space, too. There’s an extensive lineup of lip products and foundations, but in particular, its perfumes are a standout.

The Burberry scents really evoke London cool-girl style. There are scents that can transport you to a rainy day in the capital city or an English garden. And honestly, with us not being able to travel a whole lot (or at all) these days, I think we’ll take any form of escapism that we can get. Fragrances can really take you there.

I’m personally a fan of Burberry fragrances because they’re everything I want in a perfume: something that’s timeless but feels fresh. Plus, I’ve loved London ever since I studied abroad there over 10 years ago, so it perfectly suits my Anglophile preferences.

Maybe you’ve never thought about reaching for a perfume bottle from the fashion house, or maybe you’re in the market for a new fragrance. You might already be a fan. No matter the way, I thought it would be fun to take a look at some of the most popular scents from the brand. Granted, its fragrance options aren’t super extensive, but there are some classic scents and some twists. Take a look at the standouts, some of which are backed by reviews.

One of Burberry’s most popular scents, Her is a vibrant fragrance with notes of black currant, blueberry, raspberry, jasmine accord, violet accord, musk, and dry amber. An ode to the city of London, it’s described as “the embodiment of the Londoner attitude—adventurous, spirited, and bold.” One reviewer wrote, “I don’t know what to say about this perfume’s notes because I just love them. Sweet and almost reminiscent of lip balm but in the best way possible, this scent is refreshing and youthful and bright, but not in a cheap way. It has a depth and complexity I didn’t expect. It starts off fruity and light and bubbly and settles into almost a woody scent but still keeping a light overall smell.”

This one is peak iconic Burberry—in fact, one of the inspirations for this was the trench coat. It evokes an English garden after the rain, so it’s got a fresh, floral scent. It includes top notes of sweet pea and bergamot; middle notes of geranium, golden quince, and freesia; and base notes of patchouli, damask roses, and centifolia roses. One reviewer said, “Love, love, love this!!! It’s an alluring, sensual, clean, green fragrance with a hint of sweetness. The scent is very addicting, and it has staying power. It also does’t hurt that the tortoiseshell cap is adorable! I’m not one of those ‘signature scent’ ladies. I frequently change scents, but I must admit that this has become my new favorite, and I think I’ll be wearing it for a while!!”

Burberry also has a couple of unisex fragrances through its Signatures collection. If you’re looking for something a little bit more grounded, this amber scent is described as “reminiscent of a courtyard in bloom surrounded by the wilderness of a vast heath.” So you’ve got the florals, but you’ve also got the deeper scents of amber, patchouli, and vetiver.

I remember one of my friends in high school having Burberry Brit on her bathroom vanity, and I thought that was the most sophisticated thing. And you know what, in the 13 years since I’ve graduated, it still stands up. It’s got notes of icy pear, almond, and vanilla—it is citrusy fresh with some sweetness. One reviewer wrote, “Can’t say enough good things about this perfume. I was looking for an everyday perfume, and this is exactly what I needed. It goes on smelling pretty strong of citrus, but that fades after about 15 minutes into a really pretty vanilla with some spicy notes. It’s definitely unique and makes you smell amazing without being overwhelming.”

A total classic, Burberry for Women feels very grown-up and sexy, with notes of sandalwood, amber, cedarwood, and musk. But it’s also lightened up a bit with fruity scents of peach and apricot. One reviewer said, “I discovered this way back in the 1990s and have worn it every day since—I love it so much I wear it even when I’m not going anywhere. To me, it smells like vanilla with a hint of apricot, clean laundry, and an ever-so-subtle hint of fresh-cut grass and wildflowers in the breeze. It’s so delicious and sexy at the same time, and it melds into the skin and pleasantly lingers all day long. Everyone knows this is my scent, and I cannot count how many times I have been told, ‘You always smell so good!’”

This Burberry favorite has been around for a long time (since 1997 to be exact). Weekend is described as a sheer fragrance with top notes of tangerine, tree sap, and reseda plant. It also contains floral notes of wild rose, peach blossom, iris, hyacinth, and nectarine. Cedarwood and sandalwood complete the scents.

Another ode to London, this fragrance is described as bringing “to life the freedom of hazy London days.” The romantic scent has floral notes of rose and peony, but it’s also balanced with refreshing scents of lemon and fresh ginger and grounding notes of musk and amber. One reviewer wrote, “I’m not a big fan of strong, heavy perfumes. Most give me a headache. I loved this perfume, though. I thought it was a great mix of being light and fresh but still a hint of floral and smells expensive. This could definitely be a day to night fragrance.”

Burberry might have a lot of floral scents, but there are still options for those who might prefer something musky, deep, and grounding. This one is inspired by the clary sage fields of the Sussex countryside. In addition to clary sage, it also has notes of fresh cardamom, herbal vetiver, and soft hay.

This fragrance has a little bit of drama—the inspiration is a London garden during a gathering storm. It includes top notes of peach nectar, middle notes of jasmine and sugared rose, and notes of patchouli and amber to tie it all together. One reviewer wrote, “This perfume is simply delicious! I had no intention on buying this perfume. In fact, I never heard of it because it’s so new. However, when I sprayed it on my arm, I was sold. It is fun, sexy, and makes you feel like a ‘grown woman’ without smelling like an old woman. I love things that make me feel ‘womanly,’ such as perfume and makeup. This really makes me feel good! It’s not too strong but not so light that I can’t smell myself. This can be worn on a date and to work. It lasts long, too. If you want a scent that will make you feel sexy for any occasion and make heads spin, this is the scent for you.”

For the shiniest pout ever, this lip gloss will get you there. Apply one layer for a dewy finish or multiple layers for something super dramatic.

This two-in-one foundation stick/concealer contains aloe vera and optical diffusers to make your face really glow. Plus, it’s a lightweight formula.

If you’re feeling a natural, subtle look, apply this eye shadow dry. If you want something a little more dramatic, opt for wet. Its gel-like texture makes sure it goes on smoothly.

This red lipstick is gel based, so it’s easy to glide on. It’s also packed with hydrating ingredients like lavender, tea, and rosehip, so you won’t get any dry lips here.

Burberry has brushes, too. This angled brush is perfect for a smoky eye.

Get that sun-kissed glow with this bronzer. It also has emollient properties to smooth the skin and UV filters for environmental protection.

The finish for this lip color is sheer and matte, but it is totally buildable, too, if you want a more saturated look. The formula will also keep your lips moisturized for up to eight hours.

Use this Medium Eyeshadow Brush to apply color to your entire lid. The flat-tip brush works well with both dry and creamy shadows. Next up, A Definitive Ranking of the Best YSL Perfumes of All Time

Vintage Fashion Lovers, Rejoice: Netflix’s Firefly Lane Is a Blast from the Past

Welcome to Firefly Lane! The year is… well, that depends on the episode. Netflix’s enchanting adaptation of the Firefly Lane books by Kristen Hannah stars Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke as two lifelong best friends in a 10-episode first season that chronicles over five decades of family, relationships, and of course, fashion. Fans of the movie Now and Then (1995) will delight in the throwback vibes of the music, time-hopping narrative, and eerily on-point costumes of the main characters throughout the ’70s, ’80s, and ’00s. To confess that I binge-watched the entire show in just two days should come as no surprise.

As fashion journalist Elizabeth Holmes regularly remarks, I had “so many thoughts.” Luckily, costume designer Allisa Swanson had all of the answers (plus a few pro tips), making me appreciate the depth of Firefly Lane and its characters even more. Without spoiling any of the roller-coaster plotlines, Swanson provided incredible insight into what it takes to outfit an entire cast (background actors included) in authentic vintage fashion, and also how the tiniest details are critical when creating a signature style that spans decades.

You’ve been a professional costume designer for over 20 years, so what excited you about Firefly Lane?

I loved the idea [of a show that spans multiple decades] because I like projects that challenge me and knew this would be a big one. The ’70s were a fun time, in general, and the ’80s is a fabulous decade for costumes. The 2000s were not our greatest period of time for clothes, but it is so different than how we dress today… I was really excited to undertake something that flexed my design skills so broadly.

Were some decades more difficult to design for than others?

Finding kids’ clothes—particularly for the early ’60s scenes—was difficult. For the scene with baby Shawn, I had a local lady in Vancouver knit those infant onesies for us because there was nothing around from the early ’60s that we could buy that would look period-appropriate for a one-year-old. I found reference photos from the early ’60s as to what babies would wear, so we sent the photos and some yarn, and she knit those for us.

For looks from the ’70s onward, I went on a huge thrift store shopping spree right at the beginning of prep. My assistant and I hit every small town within a five-hour drive of where we lived and visited every thrift store we could. We filled up my minivan and a half-ton truck over four days. We were able to find authentic items from the ’70s, ’80s, and 2000s because people have been cleaning out their closest and getting rid of things they have been holding onto for 20-plus years.  There were even a few stores in the small towns that we had relationships with, and every time they got new stock, we would do a video conference (this was pre-COVID) and they would send us the stuff we liked.

What references did you draw from to create the overall look and feel for each decade?

I used a lot of catalogs from the ’70s and ’80s, especially Sears catalogs because that’s what everyday people wore. I had quite a few magazines from the ’80s in my collection, but that was high fashion, which our girls weren’t quite able to afford even if they aspired to it.

I also have a huge collection of patterns from the ’70s and the ’80s, some of which belonged to my grandmother, and some were what I was making in the ’80s. We referenced a lot of these patterns to get a feel for the way a blazer was cut differently than it would be cut today, or how princess seams would fit in different spots.

And, of course, the internet is always helpful. Pinterest is one of my favorite websites of all time, so I spent a lot of time creating boards on my personal account. I had ’70s Kate, ’70s Tully, etc. Then I had general ’70s and ’80s boards. Any time a new character came up, I would create a new Pinterest board, even for minor characters and background actors.

When it came time to actually do the mood board for specific characters, I read the book before and highlighted it and dog-eared it and took notes, using that for cues along with the script to put character profiles together. Kate is shy and retiring and smart, and ambitious but ambitious in her own way for her own life. Tully, who was larger than life from the very beginning, is always striving for more and to be better. Starting with those character attributes, I built their mood boards, which included overarching color pallets. Kate in the ’80s was all about pastels. Tully was very bright and jewel-toned. Kate was always softer, as the grounding maternal one. Everything had a coziness to her, even when she was at work.

Who were some real-life references or sources of inspiration for Tully and Kate?

Brooke Shields was a big icon that I channeled for both of their college looks. The fun thing about the ’80s was that it’s not just one look from the beginning to the end. The ’80s had so many different trends that if we were doing ’82 it had to look different than what we were doing in ’87. Brooke Shields embodied the early ’80s whereas Cindy Crawford was my muse for the late ’80s scenes.

Also, Oprah was someone I looked to for Tully’s style in the 2000s since that was when the Oprah Winfrey Show was at its peak. Oprah has always been very elegant, so I looked to re-create that for Tully. A lot of the icons of the early 2000s, like Paris Hilton, were too young for Tully. She’s still a 40-year-old woman, so she’s not going to run around with her midriff showing. Jennifer Aniston was a big source of inspiration for 2000s Kate.

What was your favorite decade to style Tully? What about Kate?

I especially loved the ’80s as a whole, since it changes so much within the decade. All of the characters had a really cool dressy ’80s look with big hair and shoulder pads. In the ’80s everyone was done. You left the house dressed up in a look—there was so much personality. You could look completely different than the person you were standing next to and yet you were appropriately dressed.

I really loved all of the costumes at the late-’80s wedding. Tully’s purple-and-black suit was one of the ones that we found in a thrift store. With a little bit of tweaking, very minor alterations it fit. We didn’t have to do anything to it—it was perfect and fit Katherine Heigel like a glove.

We modeled Kate and the other bridesmaids’ dresses after a bridesmaids dress I actually wore in 1987 with a boned bodice and basque waist that dips in front and exaggerated sleeves. We needed so many yards of the pink raw silk that we had to preorder it and it came straight from the factory in India. It’s just beautiful fabric.

For the men, Richard Gere was a major influence, as well as popular movies of the time like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Back to the Future. Interestingly enough, menswear doesn’t change the way womenswear does. There are subtle differences, like in the ’80s waists were higher and shirts were tucked into pegged and cuffed jeans.

In the 2000s, everyone was wearing their pants very low on the hip and super baggy. All the men in the show, particularly in the 2000s, look like they’re in dad’s clothes. Everything is too big. It was actually really hard to make the men look sexy in the 2000s when needed them to and yet keep to the fashion of the day.

What are your tips for vintage shopping or thrifting for pieces from a particular era? Were there any specific brands you looked for?

My approach was more about achieving the overall style of the decade. There were so many people to dress from head to toe that shopping for a specific brand wasn’t a priority. I thought when we did our thrifting it would just be for background and concepts, but we found such good-quality pieces that a lot of the stuff we thrifted was actually worn in the show. In the trailer, Tully wears a beautiful black knit jumpsuit with the pearl neckline from the ’80s. We found that at a thrift store and it was in fantastic shape.

High-waisted jeans were coming back when we started shooting, so we’d shop for pants in a couple sizes higher in order to get a good high waist and then take it in at the waist and leave the legs bigger. Overall, the jeans were a mix of vintage pieces and some from today’s stores, many augmented to fit the girls in the waist properly.

Let’s talk about accessories. Kate’s glasses obviously evolve throughout the year, which as a glasses-wearer I love. How did you source those frames?

Glasses generally fall under the props department, but because fashion was so important, we would decide on them together. First, the actress would come in for her fitting, we’d get her looks going, and then about a couple looks in, props would come in with the glasses and together and we’d pick our top two frames. If I didn’t think a pair of glasses went with Kate’s overall look, we didn’t let Sarah try them on at all.

Also, jewelry is prevalent, particularly for Tully. Can you tell me about working with Jewels for Hope?

The ’80s specifically were jewel-centric—everything was big and oversize and everybody wore jewelry every day. Even in the 2000s, jewelry was a big part of completing an outfit. When we reach the 2000s in the show, Tully has a lot of money, so her jewelry had to look luxe and expensive. Tully is never going to go out and not look her best, and that includes the jewelry that is the frame for our faces.

During filming, we shot two episodes at a time, which is called blocked shooting. Before each block started I would take at least an hour to go through Tully’s lineup and plan the jewelry that went with each outfit. It could take hours depending on how many changes she had. There were a few episodes where both Kate and Tully would have almost 40 changes over two episodes between the ’80s and 2000s.

Sourcing the jewelry was also fun. I will call up Valerie Guerrero of The Artisan Group, who works with independent artists around the globe, and she will share what I am doing: “Firefly Lane for Netflix needs ’70s era rings, ’80s earrings, and big statement jewelry for the early 2000s.” In this case, I got the job two months before we started to prep, so I literally called her the next day and said “I’m doing a show that spans three decades. What do you have?”

All of the artisans send handwritten notes about the piece of jewelry, how they made it, and where it comes from. I took all of the notes to set, and whenever we’d use a piece specifically from the artisans, we would write down who it went on and what episode it went in, so we could let Valerie know when they could see their work on screen. It’s a nice way for local artisans who handmake everything to get the exposure that they wouldn’t normally get.

Once the episode comes out I’ll tweet or put it on Instagram and tag them. I’ve been using that service now since 2015 and I love it. I used it on The Hundreds and Once Upon a Time, and every piece they sent me got into the show on Firefly Lane. Every artist who made something for me got featured. All of the jewelry was so unique and special. I hope the viewers enjoy it as much as I did!

California police are searching for a man allegedly who was caught on surveillance camera robbing Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles in Pasadena at gunpoint.

The man entered the store and tried to place an order. He was refused because he was not wearing a mask. They told him to return to the restaurant once he had a face covering. Undeterred, the man then pulled out his gun and allegedly stole chicken, waffles, and syrup.

“He comes straight toward me with a gun, pointing at me and saying, ‘Put all the chicken in the bag,’” cook Robert Gonzalez told ABC7. Staff confirmed that he did not take any cash from the store — he only wanted a plate of food.

Police are now investigating the incident:

“We are following active investigative leads in this case,” Pasadena Police Department spokesperson Carolyn Gordon told BuzzFeed News, “We consider this to be a crime.”
